Just as dovetailing is considered the epitome of hand joinery, planing wood surfaces to a finish is the holy grail of working with hand planes. This is introduced in the scheduled class, “Planes – Essential Setup and Use”, but covered specifically and in greater depth in this by-appointment class. The finest points of setting up the plane and sharpening the plane iron for surface planing are explored, allowing us to take extremely thin shavings and — ultimately — to plane an entire surface to a burnished finish without any evidence of the plane’s passage.
